Glen Richards and Team WFR seal 2011 BSB Evo Championship

Glen Richards and Team WFR cemented the 2011 Mirror.co.uk BSB Evo Championship at Silverstone this weekend, after a brace of 2nd place finishes from Glen Richards put the title out of reach of teammate Graeme Gowland, who won both races.

A frequent visitor to the rostrum, Glen’s consistent podium finishes have secured him a championship that he has led since Round 4 at Thruxton. In 23 races in 2011 Richards has finished on the podium in all but three.

Following his Championship winning race Glen said: “I just want to say a big thank you to the team, because they’ve put a great bike underneath me this year. A big thank you to my crew chief Roger and all my mechanics, Luke, Victor, Angus and Colin. We have got some of the best guys in the pit lane in our garage and this championship proves it.

"I’m happy to have got it won with a round to spare and can just look forward to going to Brands now without worrying about a championship and just enjoy my weekend."

Graeme Gowland, second in the championship and Glen’s closest title rival, once again won both races at Silverstone which means he has now won 9 out of the last 10 races, though it wasn’t enough to take it to the last round at Brands Hatch. But even that didn’t take the smile off Graeme’s face.

Speaking straight after his second race victory of the day Graeme said: "I just want to say congratulations to Glen on winning the championship, he really deserves that and well done to Team WFR as well because it’s a great result."

There was one sour point from the weekend when, on Friday afternoon, Graeme and the team were briefly the centre of cheat rumours following Friday’s first Free Practice session in which Graeme finished 3rd overall.

The bike was taken away and promptly assessed by BSB officials after which Series Director Stuart Higgs released the following statement:

"There were some raised eyebrows over Graeme's lap times in FP1 and 2, so we wanted to stop the cheating rumours before they started. The bike has been on the dyno and we have downloaded all the data from their Motec software and nothing has found to be illegal. He is just riding the wheels off the thing."

Team Manager Myles Schofield said; "The BSB race organisers and officials have spoken, and published the data on the No.81 bike for all to see. The bike is operating within the regulations. Graeme is just a very talented rider and lets his racing do the talking. I don’t think we need to talk about it any further."

As Graeme and Glen scrapped it out for the title, James Westmoreland and some of the team began their assault on 2012 ahead of the rule changes for next season.

Westmoreland was frequently ahead of Gary Mason and the MSS Colchester Kawasaki team who led the way by rolling out their new bike at Donington Park.

James said: "Initially the bike felt good, even from the first laps we did; the engine feels strong and it is fast, but with new bikes you always have a few early problems. We are getting there though and I am happy.

"Starting our 2012 season now and gaining experience on the tracks we will actually race on is hugely beneficial. I do think some riders will need to adapt but I have never had the best electronics packages so I can't really compare the two in that way."

Team Manger Myles Schofield summed up the weekend by saying; "I would just like to congratulate Glen and all of the team on a fantastic job this year. Glen is not only a rider who consistently finishes races but consistently grabs podiums too and it is that knack that has secured him his third title in five years.

"Glen’s championship win and Graeme’s class defying races have put the team firmly on the map in our first year of racing at the top level of BSB.

"We want to end the year on a high and take this momentum into winter testing and 2012 when, thanks to our success this year and James Westmorland’s outings on the new bike, we hope to hit the ground running."

As well as all the action out on track the team was also hosting a an event for 100 guests of CLAPA (Cleft Lip and Palate Association), where the families were joined by a few celebrity faces who even made it on to the grid for the start of the race.
